When looking at the music of pop-culture, Lady Gaga's song "Born this Way" seems to embody the period of Romanticism. Her lyrics speak about the natural man and the uniqueness of her being, made by God. This song focuses on loving your
individuality and being proud of who you are. It's controversial lyrics further reflect the Romantic period, in that it was a time
when Biblical principles were turned upside down, replaced by one's own
truth.
At the 2010 Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga wore this unforgettable Meat Dress which awed those who encountered it. Her reasoning behind the theatrical ensemble was to protest the loss of liberty.
She challenges, ". . . For me this evening, if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon, we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat" (Lady Gaga's Meat Dress, 2010).
This statement reflects many of the Romantics ideals that non-conformity, liberty and self-rule were to be cherished. According to Romantic literary author, Ralph Waldo Emerson, "No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. Good and bad are but names very readily transferred to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution, the only wrong what is against it" (Baym & Levine [Eds], 2013).
